The organisation behind this software appears to work on a donation system for its use. However the dedication to support,quality of the product and innovation behind it, do not appear suffer as a consequence of this.
In fact free Spybot features several unique elements that you won't find in similar software.

And to make sure nobody gets left out, the home site translates to over 20 languages, the software to over 50 languages.
The product runs in all windows versions from Win98 to 2003.

It performs well for free software (removing a remarkable 72% of 'detections' in our anti-spyware test.)

The recent upgrade - Version 1.4 is particularly good at dealing with web browser infestations such as Browser Hijackers and Host File Hijacking.

Scanning is quick but removal is slower than comparable products. And annoyingly, often requires a reboot to remove some objects, running another full scan at boot up.
